Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Matthew J. Fleming has been named New Hampshire’s Hometown Hero by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Hampshire, according to a May 20 Department of Justice release.

U.S. Attorney Erin Creegan announced the recognition in Concord, where Fleming was honored at the U.S. Attorney’s Office during a ceremony attended by friends, colleagues and his police K9, Niko.

The DOJ release said each federal district’s U.S. Attorney selected one public servant for the honor as part of America’s 250th anniversary recognition. Fleming was selected for years of work focused on rescuing children from sexual abuse and preventing further victimization.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, K9 Niko is an electronic-storage detection dog trained to locate electronic media that may contain evidence of child abuse.

ThinBlueNews is keeping the case background broad because the recognition involves child-victim work. The publicly reported focus is the law-enforcement service: a deputy and K9 team recognized for specialized work that can help investigators find evidence and protect children.

The official DOJ photo from the ceremony shows U.S. Attorney Creegan presenting the award to Fleming with K9 Niko, giving the story a real, source-backed visual rather than a generic or AI-looking illustration.

The recognition also highlights a side of public safety many communities rarely see: specialized investigators, K9 partners, prosecutors and support staff working together on cases where careful evidence recovery can matter for vulnerable victims.
